Your NDIS Plan Review Is Coming Up — Here’s How to Make It Count

If you’ve been on the NDIS for a while, you know the drill: every 12 to 24 months, your plan comes up for review. For many participants and their families, this can feel like starting from scratch — gathering evidence, explaining needs again, and hoping the outcome reflects reality.

But a plan review doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right preparation, it’s your opportunity to fine-tune your supports, address what’s changed, and ensure your funding actually matches your goals.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is an NDIS Plan Review?

A plan review is a scheduled reassessment of your current NDIS plan. The NDIA looks at how your supports have been working, whether your circumstances have changed, and what you’ll need going forward.

There are a few types of reviews:

  • Scheduled reviews — these happen automatically when your plan is due to end
  • Participant-requested reviews — if your situation changes significantly before your plan ends, you can request an early review
  • Light-touch reviews — a shorter process for participants whose needs haven’t changed much

No matter which type applies to you, preparation is key.

Before Your Review: What to Gather

The more evidence you bring, the easier it is for the NDIA to understand your situation. Consider collecting:

  • Updated reports from therapists, doctors, or specialists — especially if your needs have changed
  • A summary of how you’ve used your current plan — what worked, what didn’t, and where you ran short
  • Examples of unmet needs — if your funding didn’t cover something essential, document it
  • Progress on your goals — even small wins matter, as they show what’s possible with the right support
  • New goals — think about what you want to achieve in the next 12 months and what support you’ll need to get there

If you’re working with a support coordinator or provider like Easy Community Services, they can help you pull this together.

During the Review: What to Expect

Your review might happen over the phone, via video call, or face-to-face. A planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) will walk through your current plan and ask questions about your daily life, your supports, and your goals.

A few tips:

  • Be honest about your challenges. It’s tempting to downplay difficulties, but this can lead to underfunding.
  • Bring a support person. A family member, carer, or advocate can help you stay on track and remember key points.
  • Ask questions. If something isn’t clear — about funding categories, support options, or your plan structure — ask for clarification.

After the Review: What Happens Next

Once your review is complete, the NDIA will send you a new plan. This usually takes a few weeks, though it can vary.

When your new plan arrives:

  • Check that your funding reflects what you discussed
  • Make sure your goals are accurately recorded
  • If something isn’t right, you have the option to request an internal review or appeal

Your provider can help you understand the new plan and adjust your supports accordingly.

What If Your Needs Have Changed Significantly?

Life doesn’t wait for scheduled reviews. If your circumstances change — a new diagnosis, a change in living situation, increased care needs — you can request a plan reassessment at any time.

At Easy Community Services, we work closely with participants and their families to ensure plans stay relevant. Whether it’s helping you stay organised in the lead-up, attending your review meeting as a support person, or adjusting services after a new plan is approved, we’re here to help.
