The short answer: yes, you can change NDIS providers mid-plan. You don’t have to wait until your next plan review. Your NDIS plan belongs to you, not to your provider — and that means you get to decide who delivers your support.

If you’re in Brisbane or Queensland and your current provider isn’t meeting your needs, switching is always an option. Here’s what you need to know.

Why People Switch Providers

Families change NDIS providers for many reasons:

  • Poor communication or a provider that doesn’t listen to your needs
  • Inconsistent support workers or high staff turnover
  • A provider that feels too corporate or rigid, rather than personalised
  • Missing out on activities or community access you want
  • A provider who pressures you or makes you feel like a burden
  • Wanting a provider with a clearer focus on safety and integrity

Any of these is a valid reason to look elsewhere.

How to Change Providers Mid-Plan

1. Research your options. Look at other providers in your area. Read their website, check testimonials, and think about what matters most to you — responsiveness, quality of staff, community involvement, or something else.

2. Contact the new provider. Most providers will ask you some questions to make sure you’re a good fit for them. Be honest about your needs and what you’re looking for. If they’re interested, they’ll work with you to set up a transition.

3. Let your current provider know. If you have a plan manager or support coordinator, tell them first. They may ask you some questions, but they can’t stop you. Your choice is final.

4. Notify the NDIS. If you manage your own plan (Self-Managed), simply stop engaging the old provider and start with the new one. The new provider will need your NDIS plan information. If your plan is Centrally Managed, the NDIS will manage the transition once you’ve notified them.

5. Plan the handover date. Work with both providers on when the changeover happens. Many providers ask for a notice period (often 1–2 weeks, depending on your service agreement). Plan ahead so there’s no gap in your support.

Will Switching Affect Your Funding?

No. Changing providers does not change your NDIS plan or your funding. Your plan stays the same — only the organisation delivering your support changes. Your funding follows you to the new provider.

What If Your Provider Pushes Back?

Some providers may try to discourage you or make the process difficult. This is where understanding your rights matters. You have Choice and Control — that’s not just a slogan, it’s a legal right under the NDIS Act. You can change providers whenever you choose, for any reason.

If your current provider is being obstructive, contact the NDIS Commission at 1800 035 734. They protect your rights and can intervene if a provider is violating the NDIS Code of Conduct.

Finding the Right Provider for You

When you’re looking at a new provider, ask yourself:

  • Do they listen when I talk about what I need?
  • Are they honest about what they can and can’t do?
  • Do they treat me like a person, not a funding source?
  • Would I trust them with my health and safety?

These questions matter more than price, since NDIS funding covers your services.
