Changing NDIS providers should be a straightforward process. But for many participants, it’s not. All too often, we hear stories of participants being guilt-tripped, emotionally manipulated, or even intimidated when they try to leave their current provider.
At Easy Community Services, we believe this is completely unacceptable.
We’re here to remind you: You have the right to choice and control. Your NDIS plan is about your goals, your needs, and your life. Not your provider’s business.
🚩 Manipulation Is Not Support — It’s a Red Flag
NDIS providers are supposed to support your independence, not make you feel bad for exercising it. If a provider:
- Cries or becomes emotional to stop you from leaving
- Tells you you’re being “disloyal” or “hurting the team”
- Says your new provider won’t be as good
- Tries to delay the transition with unnecessary paperwork
- Implies you’ll lose your support or services altogether
…you’re not dealing with a supportive provider. You’re dealing with manipulation.
✅ What You Can Do — Steps to Set Boundaries and Move Forward
- Trust Your Gut
If something feels wrong, it probably is. No provider should ever make you feel guilty for making a change that’s right for you. - Put It in Writing
Notify your provider via email or letter that you’re ending services. You don’t need to explain or justify your decision. Keep it professional: “As of [date], I will no longer be requiring services from your organisation. Thank you for your support to date.” - Know Your Rights
Under the NDIS Code of Conduct, providers must respect your right to choice and control. If they don’t, they are breaching NDIS quality standards. - Set Clear Boundaries
If conversations become emotional or uncomfortable, you can say: “I appreciate the support you’ve given me, but my decision is final and I won’t be discussing it further.” - Have an Advocate
You’re allowed to have a support coordinator, family member, or advocate with you during difficult conversations. You do not have to face this alone. - Report Concerns
If the manipulation escalates or you feel threatened, you can report it to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission at www.ndiscommission.gov.au.
