Assistance with daily living falls under the NDIS Core Supports – the most flexible support budgets. It’s all about offering NDIS participants an extra hand with everyday tasks so they can achieve greater independence.

In this article, we’ll cover what exactly assistance with daily living is, how it differs from similar supports, as well as what it does and doesn’t cover.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide to NDIS assistance with daily living – this is it!

What is assistance with daily life?

Assistance with daily living covers care and support services that help participants complete daily personal activities. Its entire purpose is to enable individuals to live as autonomously as possible.

It ensures that individuals are still able to live in their own homes, live their own lives, without needing a full time support worker. It gives them that edge in their everyday tasks, so they can focus on the more important things in life – like living it.

It covers everything from short-term accommodation to assistance with meal preparation and housekeeping.

This form of assistance can take place at home, but it can also be used out in the community – or a bit of both! It entirely depends on the specific needs of the individual.

How is it different from Capacity Building daily living supports?

When you look into supports, you’ll notice that there’s a support category under Capacity Building with the name: improved daily living.

However, while the names are very similar, they have slightly different purposes.

Assistance with daily life as a Core Support relates to assistance with everyday tasks that individuals can’t complete on their own. Like showering, cleaning, and accessing the community. These are crucial for helping NDIS participants maintain a happy and healthy lifestyle.

But improved daily living under Capacity Building focuses on helping you build independence and learn new skills, so you are less reliant on support services in the future. For example, you may work with a support worker to learn how to use public transportation.

Examples of assistance with daily life

Assistance with daily life includes a whole range of activities. However, what you get funding for will ultimately depend on what is reasonable and necessary to support your individual needs. These services and supports can include:

It’s best to keep in mind that the cost of these individual services will depend greatly on factors such as location, day, time of day, and the individual level of support. For example, hiring a support worker will generally cost a bit more on a Sunday than it would on a Monday!

Things not included in assistance with daily living

While it’s easy to read what is included in assistance with daily life, it can sometimes make it much easier to understand when you look at what’s not included in this support service.

There are just a few things you cannot use this NDIS funding under assistance with daily living:

  • The cost of food – you may hire a support worker to help with meal prep, but not the purchasing of the ingredients themselves
  • The cost of cleaning and household supplies – again, NDIS funds won’t cover the cost of your fabric softener or cleaning wipes.
  • The cost of personal items that are not related to your disability (toothbrush, toothpaste etc)
  • Ticket prices for events – you can pay or use your Companion Card for a support worker to accompany you to an art gallery, but your NDIS funding won’t cover the entry fee in its entirety.

If you’re unsure whether your plan covers a specific service or support? It’s best to contact your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator for clarification.

Want to check if assistance with daily life is covered by your NDIS plan? Here’s how

Just head to your myplace portal and search for “assistance with daily life” in your plan. You can also talk to your Plan Manager if you’re unsure.

Don’t forget: NDIS Core Support funding is designed to be flexible, and can be used for all four support categories.
