The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be genuinely life-changing for people living with disability and their families. But for many people, the first question is simply: where do I start?

This guide gives you a plain-English overview of how the NDIS access process works — and where Easy Community Services can step in to help you through it.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is Australia’s national scheme that funds supports and services for people with a permanent and significant disability. It’s administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and provides individualised funding to help participants live more independently, access their community, and reach their goals.

If you’re approved, you receive an NDIS plan — a document outlining the funding available to you across different support categories.

Who Can Apply?

To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet three criteria:

  • Age — you must be under 65 when you first apply.
  • Residency — you must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
  • Disability — you must have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.

The disability criterion is where most people have questions. The NDIS looks at the functional impact of your condition — not just the diagnosis itself. This means the supporting evidence you provide matters a great deal.

The Basic Steps to Apply

Here is a simplified look at the process:

  1. Check your eligibility

Use the NDIS eligibility checklist on the NDIS website, or speak with a support organisation (like us) who can walk you through it.

  1. Gather supporting evidence

You’ll need documentation from treating health professionals — such as GPs, specialists, or allied health practitioners — that describes your disability and its functional impact on your daily life. This evidence is critical. Gaps here are one of the most common reasons applications are delayed or declined.

  1. Submit an Access Request

You can submit an Access Request Form to the NDIA by phone (1800 800 110), by submitting the form online, or through an NDIS partner. Once submitted, the NDIA has 21 days to make a decision (though this can take longer in practice).

  1. Await a decision

If approved, you’ll be contacted to begin the planning process. If you’re not approved, you have the right to request a review — and this is something we can assist with.

  1. Plan your supports

Once you have an NDIS plan in place, the real work begins: choosing providers who genuinely understand your needs and goals.

It’s Not Always Straightforward

We won’t pretend the application process is simple. It can involve a significant amount of paperwork, careful evidence gathering, and navigating language that isn’t always easy to interpret.

Some people apply and are declined on their first attempt — not because they aren’t eligible, but because the application wasn’t put together in a way the NDIA requires. Others feel uncertain about what to say, or don’t realise the level of functional detail that’s needed.

That’s where having the right support alongside you makes a real difference.
