Supported Independent Living (SIL) is the NDIS support that helps people with disability live day to day in their own home or shared home — with the right amount of hands-on help, and without giving up Choice and Control.
This page is for NDIS participants, families and guardians in Greater Brisbane (including Capalaba and Morayfield) who are checking whether SIL fits their plan, what to look for in a SIL provider, and how to enquire about capacity with Easy Community Services.
Short version: SIL is ongoing daily support in the participant’s usual home setting. It is different from respite (short-term accommodation that gives a carer a break). Funding sits in the NDIS plan. You choose the provider. Easy Community Services is a registered NDIA provider (4050170268) offering SIL, respite and assistance with daily living across Greater Brisbane — and we deliberately do not offer Support Coordination.
What is Supported Independent Living under the NDIS?
Supported Independent Living is ongoing support so a participant can live as independently as possible at home. That can mean help with personal care, meals, household tasks, medication prompting where appropriate, getting ready for the day, and getting out into the community.
SIL support levels vary widely. One person might need morning support a few days a week and manage the rest alone. Another might need substantial daily support, including overnight arrangements where that is funded and safe. The arrangement should match the person’s goals and routines.
SIL usually sits in a home environment: the participant’s own place, a shared home with other participants, or another living arrangement that still treats the person as the decision-maker in their own life.
How SIL is different from respite (and from other NDIS supports)
Families often land on SIL while also reading about respite and daily living support. The distinctions matter for the plan and for what you book:
- Supported Independent Living — ongoing, day-to-day support in the participant’s usual living arrangement. Goal: independence and a stable routine at home, with community access built in where it helps.
- Respite / short-term accommodation (STA) — time-limited stays (at Easy Community Services, respite stays of up to 14 days) so a primary carer can rest while the participant is supported in a safe environment. Goal: carer break + continuity of care for the participant.
- Assistance with daily life (in-home support) — funded help with daily tasks that may be a few hours a week or more intensive, without necessarily being a full SIL living arrangement.
- Community participation supports — help to join activities, build connections and go where other people go. Often delivered alongside SIL rather than instead of it.
If you are still weighing SIL against respite, read our comparison guide: SIL or respite care — choosing the right NDIS option. For daily living support and respite detail on this site, see NDIS daily living support and respite in Brisbane.
How SIL funding works (and what it costs)
SIL is funded through the NDIS plan. When SIL is in the plan, those funds are directed to the provider you choose. Participants do not pay out of pocket for funded SIL supports that sit inside the plan and the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.
Exact rates depend on the support type, time of day, and current NDIS price limits — check the current ndis.gov.au Pricing Arrangements rather than relying on a blog number that can go stale. Your plan manager or the NDIA can confirm what is already in the plan.
If SIL is not in the plan yet, the right moment to ask is usually a plan reassessment (or an earlier review if circumstances have changed). Come with specifics: which daily tasks need support, how often, and which goals that support unlocks. Vague requests are harder to assess than clear ones.

Who SIL is for
SIL is for participants who need regular support with daily living in order to live in a home setting safely and with as much independence as possible. Indicators often include:
- Substantial help needed with personal care, meals or household routines
- A goal to live in their own or shared home rather than an institutional setting
- Support needs that are ongoing, not only during a short carer break
- A plan (or plan conversation) that already points to Supports in Supported Independent Living or related daily living funding
Eligibility is decided through the NDIS planning process, not by a provider. A good provider helps you understand what SIL looks like in practice and whether their service model fits — they do not promise funding outcomes.
What to look for in a SIL provider in Brisbane
Brisbane has many SIL providers. The decision is less about marketing and more about day-to-day fit. Use this checklist when you talk to any provider — including us.
1. They ask before they promise
The first conversation should cover goals, routines, what has worked before, and what has not. A provider who guarantees a fit before understanding the person is filling a roster gap.
2. Choice and Control is real in practice
Participants can change providers. Ask: “What is your process if this is not the right fit?” A clear, calm answer is a good sign. Pressure, guilt or vagueness is not.
3. Support worker consistency
Constantly changing workers makes trust and routine hard. Ask how rostering works, how workers are matched, and what happens when someone is sick.
4. Experience with the actual support need
Complex needs, overnight support, neurological conditions or behaviours of concern need more than a website checkbox. Ask for specifics about how they support situations like yours.
5. Conflicts of interest are handled honestly
Some organisations offer Support Coordination and SIL together. That can create a financial interest in keeping supports in-house. Easy Community Services deliberately does not offer Support Coordination for that reason — service delivery stays separate from coordination advice.
6. Registration and quality oversight
Work with a registered NDIS provider so Quality and Safeguards Commission pathways apply. Easy Community Services is a registered NDIA provider (registration number 4050170268). You can verify providers via ndis.gov.au.
SIL provider registration rules have been tightening through 2026. For the July 2026 registration changes that affect Brisbane families, see our update: SIL provider registration changes — what to check now.
Community access as part of SIL (not a separate silo)
Independence at home is only half the picture. Many participants also want help to get out — cafes, classes, volunteering, sport, visiting friends, local events. Under the NDIS this often sits as social and community participation support, and it frequently runs alongside SIL rather than as a totally separate life.
Done well, community access support helps people:
- Stay connected and reduce isolation
- Build and keep friendships
- Try activities safely and build confidence in public settings
- Practise skills that transfer into work, study or everyday independence
At Easy Community Services, community access is part of how SIL and daily supports are delivered when it matches the participant’s goals. Andrea has personally supported participants on outings and community events — the point is real participation in places that matter to the person.
There is low local search demand for a standalone “community access Brisbane” page, so we cover it here on the SIL money page rather than splitting equity across another thin URL.

- Personal care and daily routines
- Meal preparation and household tasks
- Support to access the community and maintain social connections
- A support plan built with the participant and family — reviewed when life changes

SIL capacity and vacancies in Brisbane
Search interest in “SIL vacancies” is really a capacity question: who can take a SIL package, and when?
Capacity changes with rostering, matching, and the needs of people we already support. We do not publish a live vacancy board on this page because the honest answer is week-to-week.
What we can say today: Easy Community Services is open to SIL enquiries for Greater Brisbane. Tell us the suburb, the broad support pattern you need (days, evenings, overnight if relevant), and whether the plan already includes SIL or you are preparing for a plan reassessment. We will tell you plainly whether we can help now, later, or whether another pathway (for example daily living support or respite) is a better first step.
If you need something sooner than we can offer, we would rather say so early than over-promise a start date.
How to enquire (next steps)
- Check the plan — myplace portal or plan manager: is SIL or related daily living funding already there?
- Write down the routine — mornings, evenings, community days, overnight needs, goals that matter this year.
- Contact us — phone 0474 559 083, email jcurtis@easycommunityservices.com, or use the contact form.
- Have the fit conversation — we ask about the person first, then talk through whether our team can meet the need and what a start timeline looks like.
- Care plan — if we proceed, supports are written around the participant’s life.
No pressure to sign on the first call. A good SIL match is worth getting right.
FAQs
Is Supported Independent Living the same as respite care?
No. SIL is ongoing support in the participant’s usual home setting. Respite is short-term accommodation (at ECS, stays up to 14 days) that gives a carer a break. Both can be NDIS-funded; they solve different problems. See SIL or respite — how to choose.
How much does SIL cost in Brisbane?
Funded SIL is paid from the NDIS plan under the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. Participants do not pay out of pocket for funded supports. Exact line rates change — confirm on ndis.gov.au and with your plan manager.
Can I change SIL providers if I am not happy?
Yes. Under Choice and Control you can change providers. Service agreements often include a notice period (commonly around 28 days). A reputable provider supports a clean handover.
What should I look for in a SIL provider?
Questions before promises, consistent workers, real experience with your support needs, honest conflict-of-interest boundaries, and current NDIS registration. Trust and safety are non-negotiable.
Does Easy Community Services have SIL vacancies?
Capacity changes. We are open to SIL enquiries across Greater Brisbane and will give a straight answer on timing after we understand the support pattern you need.
Does Easy Community Services offer Support Coordination?
No. We deliberately do not. Keeping coordination separate avoids a conflict of interest with service delivery.
How do I get SIL added to my NDIS plan?
Talk to your plan manager or support coordinator and raise it at plan reassessment (or request an earlier review if circumstances changed). Be specific about tasks, frequency and goals. Providers can describe how support would work; the NDIA decides funding.
