At Easy Community Services, we know better than most exactly how important NDIS Supported Independent Living is to NDIS participants.
With it, NDIS participants and their families are able to enjoy an enhanced quality of life, personalised support, community integration, skill development, respite for families, and a sense of confidence for individuals in the home.
But we also understand how complicated this service can be, and how much room for trouble that confusion can cause.
So, we’ve taken a deep dive into the intricate details of this support and shed light on what you should be aware of when considering this vital service for individuals with disabilities.
What is NDIS Supported Independent Living?
It’s just one type of support from the NDIS, one that will help you live in your own home. It includes help or supervision with daily tasks, so individuals can live as independently as possible.
It’s designed for individuals with higher support needs, who need some level of help at all times.
But when you need significant help throughout the day, 7 days a week, it’s likely the success of your NDIS Supported Independent Living relies a whole lot on the quality of that support.
What does NDIS Supported Independent Living actually support?
As long as it meets the NDIS funding criteria, Supported Independent Living can help with it.
They’ll help with personal care talks, building your skills in things such as cooking, actioning behaviour support plans you have, developing your social skills.
They’ll offer support with supervision, personal safety and security, as well as medication, medical appointments and community access that is not routine or regular.
They’ll even help you get to and from community access activities as needed.
It’s not about paying your grocery bill, lodging costs or utilities – unless, of course, you’re in specialist disability accommodation – it’s about giving you the means and support to live independently. Through items covered by supports, maintenance costs associated with specialist disability accommodation and community access, NDIS hopes to make this possible.
How does the Supported Independent Living funding actually work?
The funding for this kind of support works a little differently to most NDIS and can easily confuse participants. So, we’ve broken down the basics for you below:
It’s funded individually and these supports can be shared amongst everyone in the house. In fact, a provider will put in a quote for each individual within the house and identify what a “typical week” will look like.
Remember: the NDIS will cover the reasonable and necessary costs of Supported Independent Living. You should never be out of pocket for these supports. In the vast majority of cases, the Supported Independent Living provider will liaise with the NDIA directly.
Why is it so hard to find a Supported Independent Living house?
While you can use your Supported Independent Living funding for your own home, many without adequate homes struggle to find a house that works for them. But why is this?
The fact is, there’s a lot to consider in an “SIL house”, like the ratio, approval from occupational therapists and a need for you to actually be compatible with other tenants.
