Community support plays a crucial role in the success and effectiveness of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and its ability to support its participants. It’s all about expanding the quality and enjoyment of life for people living with disabilities, allowing individuals to go where others go, do what others do, and engage in activities they actually enjoy.

We covered the basics of community support in our Assistance with Social and Community Participation NDIS blog here. But the thing about community support is that it goes beyond just a check in a box or a participation goal.

In this article, we’re taking a deep dive into why community support is so important for NDIS participants, including examples from one of our Easy Community Services clients, Louise, who saw a dramatic change in her life, her happiness, and her overall well-being.

Community support encourages goal-setting (and exceeding)

With community support, individuals are able to engage in their community. It’s a big part of ensuring that isolation – one of the leading causes of depression for many, even those not included in the NDIS – does not occur for individuals.

It’s a great way to motivate NDIS participants to set goals and reach them, especially when they have the support of a community on their side.

Just imagine the difference of setting a goal on your own, with just your NDIS care team, compared to setting a goal with a community of like-minded individuals who are ready to cheer you on every step of the way.

It makes a dramatic change to the way goals are not only achieved, but also how satisfying that achievement is. Who doesn’t love celebrating with friends?

Take Louise for example. We had a goal for her to walk just 70 metres. And in her first month with us? She walked 120 metres.

It shows that, with the right support on your side, you can achieve anything. It’s not about wrapping you in cotton wool – it’s about empowering individuals to do anything they want to do, with a community at their side every step of the way.

Community support wins us smiles on the regular

A common misconception around those living with disabilities is that their lives are empty, hollow, and they more or less sit in a room all day doing nothing.

While that couldn’t be further from the truth, community support does make all the difference to individuals under the NDIS. With a chance to get out and participate in their community on a regular basis, individuals under the NDIS are able to live a truly fulfilling life.

They’re no longer held back by limitations in a world that doesn’t make allowances for their differences. Instead, they receive support to travel, move, and participate, so they really can let loose and have fun in the best way possible. Knowing that if anything goes wrong? There’s someone there to support them.

Because that’s what the focus should be: to give them the best chance at a completely normal, enriching life. Not saying “no you can’t do that” but instead asking “how can we set you up so you can do exactly what you want to do, without limitation?”

And that’s what Louise experienced in her first month with us. Her life improved and we saw smiles and constant laughter. She was able to enjoy better activities with her son, more interaction with friends and doing activities of HER choice.

Not just activities that lumped her into one group, but activities that she herself dreamed of doing. And she had no trouble enjoying these activities once Easy Community Services was involved.

Better outlook on life = better physical condition

We’re not going to say that community support will suddenly heal NDIS participants, like a miracle cure. But it can dramatically improve the quality of their condition. With any condition or illness, no matter who you are, we all know that stress makes things worse.

Think about it like this:

When you have period cramps, back pain, a stomach flu – there’s nothing worse than crouching in the corner, staring at a wall and feeling like you’re going to die. But with maybe your favourite movie on TV, a friend or family member to check in on you, maybe a funny meme sent to you in the group chat: you feel a little better.

It doesn’t fix the condition at all, but it can help to facilitate returning to normal daily life and the ability you have to handle the pain or discomfort.

Because a better outlook and enjoyment of life really does help our bodies relieve stress and, therefore, relieve some of the nasty symptoms associated with any kind of illness, discomfort, or condition.

It’s why community support is crucial for those under the NDIS. When individuals are able to step out of their homes, into the community, and engage in activities that truly bring them joy, they’re not thinking about their lifelong pain, discomfort, and everything else holding them back.

They’re thinking about what they can do, not what they can’t do.

Which makes all the difference to how they live. Take Louise for example – we mentioned how she exceeded her goals of walking 70m and, in fact, walked an extra 50m more (that’s almost double her goal)!. But it goes beyond that – she lost nearly 4 kilos with us, and now engages in 1 paid and 1 free activity over the weekend.

In fact, we received this comment on one of our Facebook posts from Margaret, which says a lot about what community support can do:

“I know this lady [Louise] and I am astonished with the improvement emotionally and physically over the last month. She is blooming like I’ve never seen her in the last 2 ½ years I’ve known her. What a winner combination.”
